Medical massage is a manual technique of massage therapy that is used for rehabilitation, from auto accidents and whiplash to diagnosed injuries or pathologies. It is not a general massage treatment; rather, it is a massage technique utilized to help a specific problem area or pathology. The act of medical massage combines several massage techniques, including Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Massage, Myofascial Release, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage. This service is directed by a doctor and managed with a referring physicians prescription and supervision.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue massage is a way of addressing or approaching the soft tissue. The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the muscle fibers. Deep Tissue is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, overuse syndrome, postural problems, or recovery from acute and chronic injuries. This technique is beneficial for those suffering from sports injuries, whiplash or car accident injuries.
Massage therapy can help with the aches, pains, and actual impingements that can be caused by pregnancy. Gina, our prenatal specialist with advanced training, uses a side-lying system to effectively treat the whole body. Techniques can help reduce low back and pelvic pain and often relieve sciatica symptoms. Pregnancy massage is used to decrease stress, swelling, aches, and soreness, and has been found to be effective at lowering stress and anxiety. The massage is customized to a woman’s individual needs throughout her pregnancy.
Intraoral Massage Therapy
Kelsey, our licensed therapist with advanced training in this technique, works inside the mouth to address the muscles of the jaw. Intraoral is performed with disposable medical gloves to protect client and therapist. It can reduce local jaw pain, teeth grinding, clenching, headaches, migraines, and neck pain, and often addresses or highlights postural issues. As a stand alone or supplementary treatment, Intraoral integrates very well with other modalities.
Sports massage therapy is specifically designed for people who are active ranging from elite athletes to weekend warriors. This is a very popular massage style for those who feel discomfort following activity. The primary objective with a sports massage is not to get a “spa style experience” but it is designed to prevent and treat injury and enhance athletic performance. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Facilitated stretching is a common technique. It helps to loosen muscles and increase range of motion.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger Point Therapy involves the application of pressure to a local area of restriction or pain. Trigger Points are characterized by their referral patterns and are contributing factors to pain in other areas of the body. This treatment involves communication from the client for pain and referral levels, and gets quick results when done properly and followed up by the client with appropriate stretches. Dr. Ben Baker, a chiropractor in the same office, also utilizes Trigger Point therapy in his treatment plans. He works directly with the licensed massage practitioners on staff to give the patients the best care possible.
Swedish Massage is one of the most common forms in Western massage, addressing the whole body equally to reduce tension and stiffness, increase circulation and oxygen to the muscles, and increasing the flexibility of muscles and mobility of joints. During Swedish Massage, our massage therapists use oil or lotion to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes, and kneading, friction, stretching and tapping techniques. This is a highly relaxing treatment.
