Treatment of sciatica

Sciatica refers to the irritation of the sciatic nerve which is one of the largest nerves running through our legs. Any disturbance in the pathway of the sciatic nerve causes various set of symptoms including pain which is quite severe. All these set of symptoms are known as sciatica. Sciatica is caused by compression of sciatic nerve.

Treatment of sciatica is being offered in different ways these days. Treatment can include various self-care measures. Treatment of sciatica may include the application of alternating hot and cold packs; stretching exercises and the usage of the over the counter medications like analgesics and physiotherapy.

There are also some of the aggressive treatments that are being done for the treatment of the sciatica. These include surgery and infusion of sub epidural steroid injections. Sub epidural steroid injection administration is still questionable and surgery is done when a significant amount of discomfort and weakness is being caused by sciatica.

Besides all these medical and surgical procedures for the treatment of sciatica, there is another vast field that boasts to provide relief from the painful symptoms of sciatica. We are talking here about the chiropractic treatment for sciatica.

Chiropractic treatment for sciatica widely depends upon the cause of the sciatica. Depending upon the cause, there is various methods that the chiropractics apply. Some of them include:

  1. Spinal adjustments
  2. Transcutaneous  electrical nerve stimulation.
  3. Ice/cold therapy
  4. Ultrasound.

Chiropractic treatment has been proven to be very effective especially if combined with exercise. Surgery for disc injuries should be the last option if nothing else helps.
